Traveling and hotels can be a great combination, whether you’re backpacking through Southeast Asia, having your Eat, Pray, Love experience in Rome or just trying to escape from work and have some peace of mind while away. But, as you’re making your accommodation plans, it’s important to think about what is going to be the most valuable aspect of your trip and whether or not spending more on a hotel room is worth it to you.
Location is usually the most valued aspect of a hotel and, while it might be cheaper to stay in a remote B&B in the middle of nowhere, the reality is that if you’re traveling on a budget, having to spend hours commuting from your accommodation into the center of town or to whatever highlights you’ve got on your itinerary just to get a bite to eat can end up being more expensive than if you opted to pay more for something central.
Amenities are another consideration and, while some might not be a big deal (for example, complimentary breakfast can be just as good for you to grab on the go if you’re backpacking), they can make your stay more comfortable and convenient. It’s also worth looking into whether a hotel offers loyalty programs or is partnered with frequent flyer programs, as this can often be a much more cost-effective way of getting the most bang for your buck. Always read the fine print too, as some booking sites will have extra charges for services like airport transfers and unused food/beverages in their fridges that could catch you by surprise.
